A post and core treatment is a dental procedure that restores a damaged tooth by inserting a rod into the tooth’s root canal and building up the tooth structure. The procedure is also known as a post and core buildup.

Why is it done?
A tooth may need a post and core treatment if it’s severely decayed, traumatized, or has had extensive dental work
After a root canal, there may not be enough tooth structure left to support a crown

What happens during the procedure?
A post is inserted into the root canal
A core is built up to provide structure for a crown
A crown is placed over the core

What are the benefits?
The tooth is restored to its function and appearance
The tooth is protected from further damage
The tooth’s longevity is improved.

What should I avoid after the procedure?
Avoid hard foods like pretzels, peanuts, and hard sweets.
